A Winnipeg firefighter who attacked a city cab driver following a fare dispute has been granted an 18-month conditional discharge that will allow him to keep his job.
Robert Stuermer, 35, pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm in connection with the March 2006 incident.

“It’s a lot harsher to lose your best friend and I recognize that,” said Judge Brent Stewart. “That is probably the harshest consequence that could happen and it will sit upon you forever more.”
Tough shit. It wasn’t the cabbie that pulled the trigger, hung the rope, used a knife, or whatever method of killing one self was used. it would be really ironic if it was “smoke inhalation/carbon monxide” wouldn’t it…
Pay the extra $7.00 and take the cab’s license number, get a fire truck “with your brothers” to pick you up (they did at one time give drunk women tours of firehalls…oops!), drop the “hero” crap (winnipeg isn’t new york, boston, or chicago), and act like a professional.
Should fire his ass (no pun intended, no really)
and have him clean central park for “commuunity service” in turn out gear.
